The School of Electrical and Automation Engineering successfully hosted the series events of IEEE PELS DAY

The School of Electrical Engineering and Automation, in collaboration with the IEEE PELS Students Branch Chapter at Hefei University of Technology, successfully hosted the series events of 2023 IEEE Power Electronics Society Day (IEEE PELS DAY) from June 6th to June 21st, 2023. This year's series of activities featured offline lectures and discussion sessions delivered by Professor Liuchen Chang from the University of New Brunswick, Canada, and Professor Jian Sun from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, USA.

During the event, Professor Liuchen Chang delivered a presentation titled "Grid Interconnection Requirement and Power Electronic Technologies for Distributed Energy Resources." In this talk, he systematically summarized the latest developments in the field of distributed energy systems under the backdrop of power system transformation. Through an overview of the evolution of distributed energy system grid interconnection standards over the past 25 years, he revealed the relevant technical development directions for future distributed energy system integration. Professor Jian Sun, as the inventor of impedance stability analysis methods for grid-connected inverters, gave presentations titled "Generalized Immittance-Based Stability Criteria" and "Data Center Power System Stability." He provided a detailed introduction to the construction methods of impedance models for grid-connected inverters and the generalized stability analysis methods. He also reviewed his practical experiences using impedance-based stability analysis methods for grid-connected inverters to address engineering challenges, including data center power system stability.

As the former President of IEEE PELS, Professor Liuchen Chang also provided a detailed introduction to the organizational structure of IEEE PELS and the resources and opportunities it provides for power electronics members, especially student members. He encouraged students to actively participate in various academic activities organized by IEEE PELS, continuously broaden their international perspectives, enhance their academic abilities, and develop their leadership skills. He emphasized that these experiences would lay a solid foundation for their future careers. The IEEE PELS DAY workshop was a success with enthusiastic participation and active communication among the attending faculty and students.

After the workshop, professor Liuchen Chang and Professor Sun Jian were invited to have in-depth discussions with faculty and students from the Research Center for Photovoltaic System Engineering and relevant departments at the School after the presentations. During the exchange, the two experts shared insights into their research careers and engaged in discussions with faculty and students on key technical issues in the construction of future power systems that are low-carbon, green, stable, and reliable. The experts' insights on active support, flexible regulation, and stability control in new power systems provided valuable inspiration and guidance for the research direction and methodology for faculty and students in related fields.
